A Halloween GiftDear fledglings,
It should probably go without saying that Halloween is my favorite holiday. After all, I'm the girl who's co-directed a documentary on Edgar Allan Poe, am co-writing a book on cemeteries, and am also directing a documentary on cemeteries. Oh, yeah, plus I founded Quail Bell Magazine, which is like Halloween incarnate. Think I like weird, dead stuff? You bet your britches. I am elated that October 31st has arrived and know I'll only get happier as nightfall approaches. I could kiss a werewolf! Halloween gushing aside, I have another reason to be thrilled today. Art director extraordinaire, Kristen Rebelo, and I checked out the proofs of Quail Bell's companion anthologies --Airborne and The Nest (Belle Isle Books, an imprint of Brandylane Publishers)—and our jaws practically hit the Edwardian-era floorboards. They look beautiful and they are a beautiful read. What a gift! Pre-order your copies today. You'll be seeing them in Barnes & Noble and on Amazon.com not too long from now, too. Happy Halloween! Our Commonwealth PrideDear fledglings,
I had been living in Richmond, Virginia just slightly over a year when I registered the domain name for Quail Bell Magazine. It was December 2009, and I had no idea what I'd first post. I just knew that by 2010, I wanted to start gathering stories and staff for a spring launch. The first batch of writers, photographers, artists, and editors for Quail Bell weren't even based in Virginia. They came from all over the country because I lucked out on Craigslist. But the lack of face-to-face connection bothered me. While I always imagined there would be QB contributors I'd never meet due to timing and geography, I didn't think I wouldn't meet any of them. One year later, I recruited talented folks from my home state of Virginia to help me realize "the Quail Bell dream" and establish Quail Bell Press & Productions, LLC. Some of these fine people came from Northern Virginia like me—or NoVa, as we natives say—and others came from Eastern Virginia, but most came from my new city, RVA, in Central Virginia. We've had our ups and downs since then, particularly with the death of managing editor Josephine Stone in terms of downs, and yet here we are, wings outstretched, soaring. No matter where Quail Bell goes, I will always be proud of its Virginia roots. That's why I'm especially pleased to announce that today Quail Bell Magazine was listed on the Virginia Bloggers website. Not only are we in the directory, but we've joined a new community. Please poke around the website, stay tuned for our guest post, and try to make one of the Virginia Bloggers events. The Quail Bell Crew is always eager to put faces to our readers.
