"Timeless Zeitgeist" THIS SaturdayDear fledglings,
It is my pleasure to announce the third annual Quail Bell fashion show. Our first fashion show took place at the VCU Barnes & Noble Richmond, Virginia in 2011. It was a humble event, one we had been commissioned to do. Quite frankly, we had no idea what we had gotten ourselves into. We were fortunate enough to get a popular lounge and restaurant's participation last year for our show "Forgotten Folklore." We even had the creator of Dirty Richmond, Brian McDaniel, MC the event. That's not to mention all of the fabulous stores and designers whose clothes wowed our audience. Our relationship with Selba, the aforementioned restaurant and lounge, remains strong today. That's why we'll be showing there again this year. Now, two years after we stumbled through our first fashion show, we've gotten the hang of this 'catwalk thang.' A tremendous thanks goes out to fashion show director, Sidney Shuman Carter. Her assistants Lindsey Story and Jasmine Thompson also deserve a shout-out. Together, they dreamt up "Timeless Zeitgeist." You may recognize Sidney's name from select Quail Bell Photo Tales, including our print project, Quail Bell Look Book. Sidney has contributed a few stories to our website, too. Maybe you read her piece on entrepreneurship in Abingdon, Virginia, or her list of the worst horror movies ever. She even wrote a piece about gnomes in folklore and pop culture. If you've enjoyed Sidney's work on QuailBellMagazine.com, you can't miss her fashion show. It'll be the go-to event in Richmond, Virginia this Saturday, October 12th. More here. If you cannot join The Quail Bell in Richmond that night, consider joining us at Molasses Books in Brooklyn instead. As long as you spend your Saturday with The Quail Bell Crew, it's impossible to have any regrets. You can quote me on that. Because we can't get enough of tabling.Dear fledglings,
I hope you haven't been fretting about where The Quail Bell Crew has been for the past 24 hours. The short and simple answer is that we've been tabling for the seventh annual Richmond 'Zine Festival. This year the festival will take place at the Gay Community Center of Richmond, as it has for most of its history. The Quail Bell Crew will table for the whole event, even during our 2:30 p.m. workshop on fairy punk découpage. That's the beauty of having partners in crime—you can take turns doing table duty. For more information about this year's festival, check out this article from NorthRichmondNews.com. See you there! (C'mon, it's only two hours from Washington, D.C.) Setting Up Our WaresUpdate: Friday, October 4, 2013 @ 2:54 a.m.—In light of Richmond 'Zine Festival preparations, The Quail Bell Crew WILL NOT be tabling at RVA First Friday after all. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. Wondering where to find The Quail Bell Crew this Friday? How about at the First Fridays Artwalk in Richmond, Virginia? We'll be tabling new art and writing projects and overall making a splash Please join us. Our table will be located outside of Lift.

From Short Film Script to Graphic NovellaDear fledglings,
I remember being a creative writing student in Scotland the summer of 2010, wondering how I could incorporate some of the local folklore into my work. Sometime, somehow during my research, inspiration struck and I wrote a screenplay. Two summers later, I met Laura Bramble, a talented graduate from Radford University in Southwest Virginia. When I saw Laura's illustrations, I suddenly knew I wanted my screenplay to become a comic. Together, Laura and I created Bus 900, a graphic novella about a former prop designer's battle with Alzheimer's and the confusing relationship he has with his grandson. This past summer, I thought Bus 900 was finished and ready for publication. Yet as confident as I felt about the work, something still seemed amiss. Then I made a suggestion and Laura was generous enough to entertain me. Over the past few weeks, Laura has produced five stand-alone illustrations that complete the novella. Now I am proud to say that Bus 900 is, alas, complete. Please follow Bus 900 on Facebook for updates. To My Lovely Partners in CrimeDear fledglings,
There definitely comes a point when too much gushing becomes, well, too much gushing, but all this mission trip grooviness has left me feeling oh-so-grateful for everything. With that being said, I want to give a shout-out to QB art director Kristen Rebelo, QB managing editor Misty Thomas, QB fashion intern Sidney Shuman, and QB illustrator Laura Bramble. They did one heck of a job (wo)manning the fort while I was off in Peru. Not only did the maintain the website, but they: • finalized our latest print 'zine • released a special print project (you'll have to see it at the Richmond 'Zine Fest this Saturday) • organized our forthcoming Richmond fashion show, "Timeless Zeitgeist" • finished booking our reading at Molasses Books in Brooklyn • wrapped up the color illustrations for Bus 900 • designed promotional materials for The Children of Jackson Ward • worked on our documentary film, Richmond's Dead and Buried, and companion book, Images of America: Richmond's Cemeteries And more that I have to stay hush-hush about for the time being. Thank you, thank you, thank you, ladies. Your creativity and work ethic are largely why I'm proud to be a part of The Quail Bell Crew.
