Welcome, Alex! You may have already caught of some Alex's film reviews here on Quail Bell— from big-screen Oscar noms (Her) and foreign masterpieces (The Spirit of the Beehive). Well, we've decided to make his film reviewer status official. Alex Carrigan hails from Newport News, Virginia. In May 2014, he will graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Print/Online Journalism and a minor in World Cinema. He has been fascinated with studying film since he first discovered Wikipedia in middle school. Coupled with writing an extended essay for the International Baccalaureate program, this has led Alex to want to pursue a career in writing about film. Alex has been published in several VCU publications, including as a former staff writer for The Commonwealth Times, Amendment Literary Journal, and Poictesme Literary Journal. He will serve as deputy editor-in-chief for Poictesme until graduation this spring. He also likes to write short fiction and participates in a collaborative roleplaying website in his spare time. He is also fond of studying literature and music. Alex's dream is to be a film critic for a major arts publication. His favorite critics include Roger Ebert, Nathan Rabin, Todd VanDerWerff, and Tom and Lorenzo. If he can't write about film, he wants to write about art and live in an art community. Other than that, he wants to live a life full of art, culture, humor, and passion. #AlexCarrigan #FilmReviews #FilmCritic The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
A Presentation That Wasn't About Quail Bell (Not) Dear Fledglings, On March 16, Quail Bell editor Christine Stoddard spoke about her published works at a meeting of Richmond Christians Who Write. She was a secular presenter talking before a group of mainly Baptist writers interested in both mainstream and Christian publishing avenues. While Christine mentioned her forthcoming book, Images of America: Richmond Cemeteries, and other works, the presentation inevitably included a mention of Quail Bell Magazine and our premiere anthologies, The Nest and Airborne. Christine also sold and signed copies of the anthologies after the presentation. Earlier today, she received this kind letter from one of the event's attendees: Christine, Thank you so much for your talk to the RCWW group on Sunday afternoon at Grove Ave. Baptist Church. You did a great presentation and provided plenty of inspiration even as you expressed a great deal of sweet patience with all our questions! I've enjoyed your two books. A pleasant read! Thanks again, Carol Fan mail is always encouraging and encouraged! Feathery Hugs, The Quail Bell Crew If you are interested in having Quail Bell editor Christine Stoddard and art director Kristen Rebelo speak before your group, please contact us regarding topics, availability and logistics.
