Our Boys & Girls Club Debut Wondering why there weren't many updates on the website yesterday? On April 20, QB made its Boys & Girls Club debut for Global Youth Service Day. Executive Editor Christine Stoddard and Associate Editor Julie DiNisio represented VCU AmeriCorps and helped set up a world exhibit at the Boys & Girls Club in Southside Richmond. Christine worked in the European exhibit, setting up a table about European folklore, while Julie worked in the North American exhibit, donning her first-ever sports jersey. The children learned about cultures and countries from around the world.  The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Pop-up in Pittsburgh, PA!If you like things that spring up over night, you'll love what Connor Sites-Bowen is doing next in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's a pop-up bookstore the last weekend in May at Cats and Dogs Coffee Shop (4059 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224). Best yet? Quail Bell will be participating! Straight from my heart/hard drive Can you say bad Photo Booth? Dear fledglings, As I prepare to graduate from college, I cannot help but reflect over the past few years--moving to a new state, transferring schools, re-discovering Virginia, and growing up at VCU. Part of my journey, of course, has involved creating and maintaining Quail Bell. What began as a modest personal project is fast becoming an online and real-world community of art, culture, and quirkiness. I'm thrilled to see what's in store for QB in pixels and print over the next few months and even years. The paper, audio, and video projects we have planned for this summer and fall alone are sure to make your QB experience plus belle. Thank you so much for giving The QB Crew this opportunity to experiment with new media and entertain you with our many trials and errors. Now that I'm finally finishing up school, I promise I'll have more time to dedicate to my favorite fledglings! The QB Crew have so much we want to give you. So remember to check back often. Look who's talking about us!So...we're not always aware of what people are saying about QB. Maybe we should try to get on that. Maybe we need to Google ourselves waaay more often. Because on February 15th, Richmond Arts Review wrote a snippet about us and we had no feathery idea! Thanks, Richmond Arts Review for a giving a flip about these little birds--we appreciate it. We [heart] The Puffin Foundation Picture of Christine Stoddard at an outdoor Palm Sunday mass at the church Richmond's Mixteco community attends. By Zack Budryk. Whoopee! The Puffin Foundation recently awarded Executive Editor Christine Stoddard a grant to pursue an original QB photo comic on the history and folklore of the Mixteco Indians in Richmond. The comic is scheduled for release this fall, and will be available both online and in print. Right now Christine is gathering research for the comic with the help of Zack Budryk, a senior Journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University. Zack and Christine will present their preliminary findings at VCU's Poster Symposium for Undergraduate Research & Creativity. Here's another victory for QB! Thank you, Puffin!  |
