Quail Bell is a place for real and unreal stories. We accept submissions in art, writing, and multimedia, including creative, journalistic, and (semi-)scholarly work. We accept simultaneous submissions and previously published work. Please allow at least 6 months for a response, as we are an all-volunteer staff. Due to the volume of submissions, we can’t respond individually to submission status queries. If your work is accepted, please note that we may take up to a month after acceptance to post your piece(s). We will not remove work from the website for any reason (except in cases of plagiarism or abusive behavior that may pose a threat to our readers and contributors.) Please note that your work, unless otherwise indicated to you by email, will only appear online and not in print.
We can pay you in seriousfairy punk cred if we select your stuff, but, alas, offer no monetary compensation. You retain all the rights to your work and may republish it elsewhere. If you do republish the piece, please include a courtesy credit, such as "This piece first appeared on QuailBellMagazine.com."
By submitting your work for our review you agree to all conditions mentioned on this page.
In order to have your work considered for Quail Bell, please abide by our guidelines:
Direct all submissions with a subject line that includes your name and medium in all caps (e.g., BOB SMITH: NONFICTION or SALLY BROWN: PHOTOGRAPHY) to submissions@quailbellmagazine.com.
Submit text as a .Doc or .RTF. Submit visuals as .JPGs at 300 DPI. Submit audio as .mp3 attachments. Submit video as direct links to Vimeo. For other media not specified here, please contact us with a proposal.
All art files must be titled.
All text files (e.g., short stories, poems, articles, etc.) must contain your name, the title, and the word count within the body of the document.
Again, for text: We apologize in advance to all of our British friends, but please use American spelling. Make a line break, not an indent, to indicate the start of a new paragraph. Put only one space after a period. Use Associated Press Style for all non-fiction. Use whatever the heck you want for poetry.
Include a brief cover letter in the body of the email. Do not send your résumé. We encourage you to include a link to your blog or website if you have one.
Please do not send business inquiries to our submissions email. Please contact us through our Contact page if you are interested in doing business with us. This includes, but is not limited to, commissioning sponsored posts.
