Dancing With The Future
By Ghia Vitale
Oscar At The Crown is a queer nightclub musical with a dystopian touch performed by The Neon Coven, a new theater collective in New York City. This show challenges the social media-obsessed world of today and encourages attendees to dance in the face of fascism. Also, Oscar Wilde is featured in the show!
Oscar At The Crown brings the audience into a secret bunker in the fascist future. Here, the world is full of sequins, reality television, and the complete works of Oscar Wilde. This show depicts the rise and fall of Oscar Wilde, an outstanding queer poet, playwright, and literary icon. The Neon Coven immerses the audience in an alternate reality where dancing is everything. Some of this reality has a Real Housewives theme and follows a minor character from The O. C. I highly recommend this performance to anyone who’s looking for something unique, immersive, and queer positive. The Neon Coven’s performance style is electric. Check out The Neon Coven’s Instagram video which features the troupe dancing to "Not Here" at a recent Bartschland party. If you’re already mesmerized by their moves, you won’t be able to resist the urge to dance yourself silly when you're actually there. The Neon Coven suggests that audience members to “wear something cool” to the performance. Also, brush up on your queer dance moves, especially Waacking. (This instructional video is the courtesy of choreographer Andrew Barret Cox and cast member Princess Lockeroo.) Oscar At The Crown premieres on January 18th, 2019 and runs until February 2, 2019. The show will take place at 3 Dollar Bill, a new queer club located at 260 Meserole St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Tickets are selling for $25. You can buy tickets here. Listen to music from Oscar At The Crown on SoundCloud. It doesn’t take a hardcore Oscar Wilde fan to rock out to these bops.
