I got the call that my grandmother was dying on a weekday afternoon. It was a sunny spring day, objectively beautiful. I studied the imposing Gothic church outside my apartment window as I listened to my father’s uncharacteristic silence. When he could finally speak, he told me a priest was on his way.
My grandmother had dementia, so the feeling of losing her wasn’t new. I didn’t ask why this moment was declared as the beginning of her dying. I ended the call and got in my car.

By James Lawson Moore So, a weird thing happened to me the other day.
It was around 3PM, and I just picked up a half dozen unique donuts from this place at the strip mall near my house at school, called Amazing Glazed (corny name, but they have good ice cream and coffee so who’s complaining?). I don’t have a car and my girl had a class down in Norfolk, so I had about a 12-minute walk back to the house, right? I make this trip all the time, so what’s the worry? By JM Bolton Lately I see a face in the mirror that I do not know, and frankly, it disturbs me. The woman in the mirror is old, a reminder of my mortality. She is no longer pretty, and I really don’t know what to do with her. Heaven knows it’s impossible to dress her since most clothing is designed to show off the physical attributes of a much younger woman. What I wear now can only be considered camouflage for a body that is reacting to gravity and the effects of cellular deterioration. I wear loose baggy clothing with no pretension to fashion, made from soft durable fabrics, and above all, comfortable shoes. I don’t think there is a particular style of clothing suitable for the older woman except some really ugly jersey knit things from Walmart, covered with tiny purple flowers. Heaven preserve me from tiny purple flowers! And there is nothing more ridiculous that an aging woman dressing in an outfit more suitable for someone of eighteen. So what to do?

By Leah Mueller Many people regard Summer Solstice, (or Midsummer, as pagans call it), as the first day of the season. However, pagans consider this date to be summer’s exact midpoint. After Midsummer, daylight hours slowly begin to grow shorter. The end of June often feels bittersweet, since the solar energy has already peaked.

Sometimes I wonder If God exists for a Black woman. If He does, He must not be good At paying attention. This stanza opens the first poem in Leslie T. Grover's hybrid novella The Benefits of Eating White People (Jaded Ibis Press). The novella tells the story of Perpetua, an enslaved woman in the pre-Civil War southern US. At the start of the story, an illness known as the Sickness has been killing white children with no cure or reason in sight. At the same time, Perpetua's daughter, Meenie, has vanished without a trace. The novella travels throughout Perpetua's life, as she experiences violence and assault at the hands of her owners, a Doctor and his wife, "The Missus," while also exploring the current pandemic affecting their county. In between the various chapters are poems and illustrations that often contain a phrase or action from the previous chapter. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Mary Oliver once said Walt Whitman was the brother she never had. He died more than 40 years before she was born. What is it about art that can make us feel so close to the artist? The ability of one human being to capture the embodied experience of being human in a way that touches the depths of the observer's soul, that allows them to feel understood by a stranger, is a paradoxical kind of intimacy.
