As someone with Tourette’s and several other comorbid conditions, I was finally able to attend the Tourette Syndrome conference in both 2020 and 2021. Normally it is only held in Minneapolis, but thanks to efforts and sponsorships to have the event completely online, I could attend from the comfort of my own home. I could hear and watch a variety of presenters on any topic I wanted. No plane tickets, no conference fees, and plenty of panels to choose from that pertained to my specific experiences.

By Bethany Grey The 2020 Census revealed what modern women of child-bearing age already know: we’re having less children. As the mother of an only child, I’m included.
For economists, the findings are a problem to solve, but for me, they’re cathartically gratifying. While the American government ponders how to care for an army of aging blue-haired baby-boomers, the decennary statistics have soothed my greatest fear. Turns out my daughter, my one and only, may not be a lonely anomaly after all. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.

HOWL Society is a horror literature group on Discord that formed during the pandemic last year to bring people together to share their love of horror and the macabre. The group hosts a virtual book club amongst its many chat rooms, and offers a chance for horror lovers all over the world to connect and share their favorite books and media, discuss the genre, and find other ways to connect and develop bonds. Naturally, a group like this would assemble several of its writers to put a book together, and the group's first anthology is finally out on May 18th.

In response to recent hate crimes and acts of violence against Asian Americans, one of the best ways to cope with the collective trauma being experienced by so many Americans is to create art. The Art of Our Century Gallery in New York, New York, is doing just that. “Illuminated Landscapes” opened May 6, 2021 and is in partnership with Ankhlave Arts Alliance as a charitable event to stop AAPI hate. The show features five Asian American artists, Arthur Kwon Lee, Kayo Shido, Akemi Takeda, Lisa Kawazoe, and Xiao Wang.

Today’s society is captivated by Victorian culture and fashion. The Victorian era occurred during Queen Victoria of England’s reign from 1837 to 1901. Fashion defined the Victorian era in many ways, so much so, that it’s still immediately recognizable today.

The thing is, we all have to eat. When you go to the grocery store, most of those bananas, oranges, and tomatoes are coming either from a far away place, or they were grown in a greenhouse. Unless you’re going to farmer’s markets, chances are you’re buying produce that traveled hundreds of miles to get to you, and if you live in the city, fresh produce might be even harder to find. This concept is known as “food deserts.” A food desert is defined as "areas within city centers where low-income people have poor access to vegetables, fruits, and other whole foods” as described by an article from Environmental Health Perspectives published in 2008.
Food is a necessity and while it doesn’t make much sense why we have to pay for something we need to survive -- I’m looking at you, capitalism -- we still need food nonetheless. A good diet is crucial for overall good health so they’re doing more than just feeding people, they’re helping people feel their best. So, what can be done about urban food deserts? Well, how about we put the food where the people are in the form of urban gardening/farming? The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.

By Audrey Garrett Comedian, writer and actor, Maronzio Vance told Quail Bell Magazine he is now bored with comedy in a Zoom interview discussing his new comedy album. His album ‘20’ drops today, April 2nd on Spotify and other streaming services in commemoration of his past 20 years performing and acting as a comic in Los Angeles, California. The album includes comedic segments discussing anxiety, mental health and maturity. The vulnerable album inspires the long time comedian to move to story telling entertainment rather than just joke telling. Vance says, “I hate jokes, I can tell them, but I hate them”. |
