Psychedelic Pop Artist Takes on Nashville
Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, Lexx is a pop artist who draws inspiration from the realities of day-to-day life while harnessing the mystical sounds of music to create a new breed of pop music. Her first single, "Runaway", chronicles a desire to escape the world, even it is only for a little while. Though she has yet to release a full album, true magic can only happen with time, something Lexx knows well.
We spoke with Lexx about her creative rituals, her musical influences, what her latest track "Taking In" is all about, and what being an artist truly means.
You've cited Lana Del Ray as an influence on your music. How are your tracks shaped by her style?
My obsession with Lana runs too deep. I've always loved psychedelic rock and dream pop, which is a lot of what Lana does and I try to incorporate those styles into my songs. I guess the biggest thing about her music is that it is super ethereal and dream like, and I want my music to take you away from the world for awhile. Your previous single "Runaway" was inspired by a desire to get away from a darker period in your life. What inspired your latest single "Taking In"? "Taking In" is about a long distance relationship that I was in. They are so hard, but also so fun because every moment you have with that person is super special and cherished. You have to take in and treasure every bit of time you have together, because it's usually very brief and infrequent.
What are some of your creative rituals for writing and creating songs?
One of my rituals is to spend time by myself outside with just a notebook and pen. Beautiful days always inspire me and make me want to write. I've also always been a night owl so I like to write at night before bed. It helps me to process things and calm my mind a bit before going to sleep. What does it mean to be a musician? A songwriter? To me, being a musician is to fully be myself. Making music makes me so happy and it is something that is very fulfilling to me. It's one of my greatest passions and I wouldn't feel complete if I wasn't making some form of it. Whether it becomes a full-time career for me or not, I'm still going to be playing and writing songs until the day I die. Your promotional images are absolutely stunning. What inspired the process behind those photoshoots? Thank you! There usually isn't much of a process. Michelle (my photographer) and I will try to brainstorm ideas before our shoots, but typically we just make it up on the spot. For the "Taking In" photo, I knew that I wanted to be floating and have some witchy vibes. The day of the shoot, I raided Michelle's closet, found the dress that I wore, and she then found a bunch of random stuff around her house that looked like it would be in a seance. We set the whole thing up in her garage. It was crazy how it all came together, because we were just improvising the whole time. We were both so shocked and happy with how the pictures came out!
