Essam's Daily Devotion
By The Editors
Facebook is good for some things. Honestly, it's how we find many of the artists we feature here. Recently, Facebook gifted us the work of Essam Eskander. Enchanted by Essam's watercolors, we asked if we could publish a few on Quail Bell. Imagine our surprise when this gentleman's daughter, Ms. Marina Eksander, answered our email. (If only we had someone to answer all of the emails in our submissions inbox!) We zapped over a few questions and Marina zipped her father's no-nonsense answers right back. Here's what Essam had to say:
Where were you born and raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Heliopolis city in Cairo, Egypt. I currently live in Manassas, Virginia. Where did you learn to paint and draw? I am self-taught. I learn through trial and error as well as touring art exhibitions and consulting with experienced artists. What is your process? What are your preferred media? I have no specific process. Each painting has its own different process. My favorite medium is all of the water-color family. Do you have a daily or weekly routine? I am used to practicing painting on a daily basis, even when I least desire it, and this is how it became a daily habit.
What is your inspiration? What are your favorite themes?
Inspiration has no specific time frame. When it comes, it comes! However, I get motivated and inspired whenever I see beauty in any of my surroundings as well as people. As for my favorite themes, anything that attracts me to paint it becomes my favorite. Where have you shown your artwork? Only on social media. Is your work available for sale? If so, where can our readers find it? Yes, it is available for sale through my social media accounts. It's on Facebook and Instagram. They can also buy my work through my website. What advice do you have to emerging artists? Be yourself and paint whatever you like to paint.
