A Gudetama-Style Ramen ReviewBy Ghia Vitale Nissin Top Ramen is featuring Gudetama, the lazy egg character of Sanrio, on some of their product packages for a limited time. I celebrated the occasion by trying egg ramen/Gudetama-style ramen for the first time. According to Nissin Foods’ official page about the collaboration, Gudetama is appearing on their products from now through April. Based on my personal research of posts in Gudetama Facebook groups and exploring Nissin Top Ramen’s site, it seems that Gudetama currently appears two types of Nissin Top Ramen products: the chicken ramen 5-packs and the vegetarian soy sauce single packages. Gudetama has stolen my heart and honestly, they can keep it. Although Gudetama hasn’t always been my top favorite Sanrio character, reading/reviewing Gudetama: Love for the Lazy by Wook Jin Clark for Valentine’s Day made me yearn to have more of the lazy egg in my life. This desire is what prompted me to join multiple Gudetama groups on Facebook. Joining Gudetama groups was a great decision because fans often post their Gudetama goods in these groups. It was through one of these groups that I found out that Nissin Top Ramen was doing a limited-edition partnership with Sanrio in the first place. As more ramen talk cropped up in the groups, I paid attention to where people said they were finding these ramen packages with Gudetama on them. That’s when it hit me: I had never tried ramen with an egg before, but I realized my time had come. It was time for me to eat ramen with an actual Gudetama in the bowl. I’m still shocked that I didn’t realize that I needed to try egg ramen before, but I’m better off late than never, right? Dollar Tree was the answer that kept coming up, so I decided to try my luck at the one near me. Much to my delight, the store had plenty of Gudetama-style chicken ramen 5-packs. I was a bit disappointed that the store didn’t carry the single Gudetama soy sauce ramen packets, but then my gratitude for the store had any Gudetama ramen eclipsed that disappointment. I waited until Saturday to try egg ramen for the first time. It’s very easy to make the kind of egg ramen I made: You simply boil 2 cups of water, add whole or broken up ramen noodles, and wait for the noodles to cook. Once the noodles are done, you add the seasoning, stir it in, and then crack an egg and wait for it to cook in the boiling water. However, please keep in mind that there are multiple ways to make egg ramen. You can even make ramen scrambled eggs. I encourage you to explore different recipe ideas to see how you’d like to incorporate eggs into your ramen noodle dish.
When the bowl cooled down a bit, I finally tried it. I immediately loved the flavorful combination of noodles, chicken flavoring, and egg. Each flavor complemented each other perfectly. This flavor combination was everything I wanted in ramen, but I didn’t know it until that very moment. How I’ve gone my entire life without having ramen with an egg is beyond me, but I’m glad that I’m no longer missing out on this deliciousness. I enjoyed each bite down to the very last slurp of chicken-spiced water that lingered in my bowl. After I finished the bowl, I was very full. I don’t have noodles or pasta very often, so I’m sure that played a part in my feeling full. However, the egg also made the dish more filling. Adding an egg makes a ramen dish more hearty meal than ramen alone, so please keep that in mind if/when you prepare egg ramen for yourself. Along with fullness, I also felt very warm and cozy. I spent the rest of my evening watching anime and enjoying the warmth I felt from eating hot noodles. Before this, I hadn’t eaten ramen for a long time, so this warm sensation made me especially happy with my decision to try egg ramen. Because of this, I’m definitely eager to try more ramen recipes with eggs in them. It also confirms my belief that Gudetama is the world’s friend in life, love, and laziness. Trying egg ramen is a 10/10 experience that I totally plan on doing again. Until next time: Peace, love, and Gudetama. <3
