When I Dance
My arms are outstretched
I heave a deep, apprehensive sigh Like the soft sound of a flowing creek Lights focus on me They are watching I can feel their critical eyes Observing my stance, my bearing
Observing me
I feel exposed, naked My breath fastens; my vision tunnels Then the music begins It is gentle, almost velvety I fall into a trance My arms move in effortless, fluid motions Technicality and niceties escape me The music is a vortex And I am its victim My limbs are no longer a part of me They have a mind of their own I change into an arabesque My legs gyrate fluently My mind is in a reverie Unbroken and profound A pas assemblé, a chassé I don’t feel a sense of awareness The music fills my mind And drowns the rest out Oh, it’s so beautiful! A coupé dessous There is an odd sense of contentment I am at the zenith of pleasure Then the music ends I break out of my daze And open my eyes When did I close them? Silence falls upon everyone Like a heavy, suppressive blanket I restrain my breaths Afraid it will break the spell of quietude Then the audience rises The applause breaks the mystic stupor The sound is deafening Yet I embrace it with open arms As I bow down, I glimpse at the critical eyes They seem satisfied And I know I have done well
