New York, New York It's a Wonderful Town
By Jay Frankston
High towers looking down
upon the crushed bones
of social conscience.
Giant heads raised high into the clouds
with feet of cement,
between the toes of which,
a whole throng of unfaced, unnamed,
uncorked human-like creatures,
run around in circles
with no beginning,
no end, and no sense of direction.
Glass-eyed geometric monsters
reflecting from sky, to steel,
to giant cranes over the city
of numbered streets
and unnumbered people
in the midst of which I try to assert my being,
my uniqueness and my individuality
with flaming red hair and graffiti,
loud and piercing like a scream
that breaks out of the hustle and bustle
of the over-and-out Metropolis,
louder than the trucks
that back up in the traffic
or the cabs that honk their frustration,
louder than the fire engines
or the siren of ambulances
carrying victims of the war
to a more restful place in a room with white sheets
where it no longer matters
that you are late
or that the rent is due and unpaid.
