All the Way Back
By Albert Starkey
*Editor's Note: A tribute poem for the Pulse Nightclub tragedy.
It has become too difficult now
To write poetry in a circumstance
Where the blue sky cannot be
Simply the blue sky anymore,
To be working forever beyond
My own mind and sight,
To take a pen in hand,
Place it on paper and look
Into the simply blue sky,
Into the mirror of my eyes,
To wait for something
To move everything
Except the blanched paper here,
Filling with strange words
That somehow belong together,
To stay at it until the world
Calls it all the way back
From congruence to convention,
From astonishment to admonishment
Of words that must submit to craft
As the news from Orlando arrives
With forty-nine reasons why
The sky cannot be simply blue.
