Salesman and Customer: A Dialogue
“Hey, nice jacket.”
“Oh, thank you.”
“Say, have you heard of this book? It’s called the Bhagavad Gita. It’s-“
“You don’t like my jacket, do you?”
“You saw me out of everyone standing at this bus stop, tried to flatter me by complementing my jacket, and you’re only doing so to sell me something.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I just-“
“Look, I’ve had a bad day. I didn’t get much sleep, work was draining, and I just want to go home and get the day over with. You’re the first person to strike a conversation with me today, and you have ill motives to do so. No one ever compliments my appearance, much less this jacket I’ve had for five years. I was so pleased to hear someone say something nice, but now I know you’re fake, and that just makes me feel crappy for getting my hopes up.”
“I wasn’t trying to be fake. I do like your jacket.”
“But you’re much more interested in selling me a book I can probably find much cheaper online.”
“Look, I don’t want to buy the book. I’ve dealt with people like you before, and I’m not interested. Besides, I think you’re two-faced and probably going to rip me off, so please leave.”
“No problem. You should find a better job.”
