The One That's Screaming
By Jody Rathgeb

When the movie “My Cousin Vinny” came out in 1992, I was unable to enjoy it. People told me it was hilarious, but I couldn’t get to the really funny bits because of the story’s set-up. The unjust accusation of two young men made me so nervous and angry that I simply couldn’t watch.
Yeah, I’m a Libra, alright. I’m the one screaming, “That’s just not RIGHT. It’s not FAIR.” In my utopia, everyone is equal and no one pulls strings to advance. That Fox News motto really belongs to me. While I follow astrology only marginally—I’ll read my horoscope but will completely forget it five minutes later—I have long agreed with the profile given for those of us born between Sept. 23 and Oct. 22. The sign’s symbol is a set of scales, which sums up our strongest trait: a desire for balance and harmony. Oh, yes. I hate arguments, and if keeping peace means deferring to another, I will. (Although I’ll seethe about the injustice later.) Combined with my “youngest child” personality as a peacekeeper, this means I might be the world’s biggest doormat. But I fervently believe that the world is just, and in the end good will be rewarded and balance will be achieved. The flip side of this balance thing is indecision, which may or may not be my problem (OK, I stole that from Jimmy Buffett.). Actually, I am decisive … after I’ve made a pro-con ledger and considered every alternative. Libras are said to have a love of beauty and luxury, unable to tolerate that which is ugly or crass. I’m not so sure about that one. Yes, I have had to limit my purchases of art if I don’t want my place to look like a gallery, but some of the things I consider art are earthy and organic … lumpy raku-glazed pottery and primitive folk pieces rather than museum works. And when I’m traveling I’d rather spend time in a sticky local bar than go to the spa at a high-end resort. I oppose the gentrification of my lively, seedy section of Richmond, Va. Then there is the romantic Libra, driven by love, they say. We can be wooed with the candlelight dinner, the unexpected gift, the sentimental remembrance. OK, guilty … although I have also been known to go ga-ga over a food processor or the gift of a wheelbarrow. I guess it depends on what’s important to us at the time … I really wanted that wheelbarrow for my 23rd wedding anniversary! I’ve read that socially, we Libras hate being alone, but I revert to the balance thing on that issue. I cherish my solitary time, but also hate missing out on social invitations. Too much society makes me retreat, but there are times when I just have to throw a party to get my people “fix.” As always, it comes down to balance. Weigh it on the scales, and make it come out even. Yeah, I’m a Libra.
