By The Bi Goes To Ireland!
By the Bi is making its European debut at The Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. On May 4 through 9, Blazing Change Players will be performing the play at the Teacher’s Club (Main). By the Bi brings bisexual awareness to the forefront of both the stage and the minds of an international audience in a way that cannot be ignored or silenced. Since bisexuals receive little to no representation anywhere, the fact that By the Bi is playing at world’s largest gay theatre festival is a huge step forward for bisexual visibility.

By the Bi is a dramatic portrayal of the issues that bisexuals face. Popular “misconceptions” and stereotypes about bisexuality characterize bisexuals as promiscuous, greedy, and confused. The 15-vignette performance combines spoken word, dance, and music to speak out against the damage caused by these negative stereotypes. According to the official Blazing Change Players website, "[By the Bi ] gives a voice to a voiceless community and sheds light on issues of not only bisexual inequality but of human inequality."
This play invites the audience into a conversation that discusses how society's negative bisexual stereotypes and prejudicial attitudes perpetuate these problems. "By the Bi focuses not only on stereotypes that bisexuals face," explains director Caroline Downs in a Quail Bell interview, "but it also addresses the disturbing statistics showing the heartbreakingly high rates of depression, suicide, drug abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, and rape that go along with being bisexual." By the Bi premiered in Richmond, Virginia. Caroline Downs and Morgan Barbour are the creators of By the Bi. While attending Virginia Commonwealth University as theatre performance majors, they also co-founded Blazing Change Players, an “educational theatre company that focuses on issues of social awareness.” Barbour, the play's choreographer, and Downs founded Blazing Change Players for the sake of “[creating] dynamic new theatre that entertains, educates, and helps promote dialogue long after the curtain call.” By the Bi lives up to that intention.
