The Millennial Welcome Wagon: Welcome to the 21st Century and Then Some
One thing that has become apparent to marketing firms around the globe is that Millennials have done an about face from the previous couple of generations in the way they interact with others. The last generation that was actually social was oddly called the “Silent Generation” and they were anything but silent. Neighbors would call out to neighbors over fences, they’d roll out the welcome wagon whenever a newcomer (which was rare in that generation!) would come to the area and were generally a very social lot. Today’s Millennials are much like the Silent Generation, but with a new twist, social media. Millennials welcome you to the 21st Century – and then some.
How Millennials Greet Newbies
When it comes to interacting with people or businesses, Millennials like to get up-close and personal. They want a face to face meeting so they can ‘read’ signals as to a person’s integrity. Body language is an important part of that ‘meeting of the minds’ so if you are of another generation moving to a new neighborhood or welcoming a Millennial to yours, be cognizant of how you come across. Your lips may be saying one thing but if you aren’t sincere, Millennials will pick up on that right away. Yes, Millennials will spend time on social media but when it comes to developing real relationships, business or personal, they want to see a face behind a name.
Once You Are Accepted – You’re In Like Flynn
There is something that can be said about the Millennial Welcome Wagon and that is the fact that once they’ve sized you up and accepted you, you are in like Flynn. You are either in or out but rarely are Millennials complacent. They are very opinionated and make up their minds quite quickly. Again, it all points back to that initial meeting so make a good impression, especially if you are looking for some rather sensitive information about your new neighborhood. Looking to find marijuana dispensaries close by? Don’t come across like an interrogator or you’ll get nowhere. Not only will they play dumb but this may be the very last conversation you ever have with them!
The Bottom Line – Be Real
The bottom line for a Millennial is that you should be exactly who you are. Whether you are a Park Avenue advertising executive or a bag lady off the Greyhound bus, a Millennial will respect you for being just who you are. Don’t go putting on any false airs because they will spot a fake a mile away. Remember, this is a generation who wants more from relationships, even casual ones, than anyone since the Silent Generation. Millennials want to know who they are talking to and they want honest discourse. Once you’ve learned how to simply be just who you are, you will be warmly greeted by the Millennial Welcome Wagon.
Whether you are moving to a new home, starting a new job or transferring from one college to the next, it is important to be exactly who you are – nothing more or nothing less. That’s what life should be about anyway and it took a New Silent Generation in a new century to figure that out. Welcome to the 21st Century!
