3 TV Shows With Great Concepts of Feminism
Apart from the music scene, feminism has been on TV for quite a while. Many TV shows have added their own contribution to the feminist struggle by depicting varying translations of feminism on the big screens. This piece takes a look at some of these below:
Vikings
Vikings
It is 4 seasons in, but this show still lives up to its tag as one of the best examples of feminism on TV. Lagertha is the main female protagonist in the series but her story is just a representation of the feminism message of the show writers. In the show, Lagertha (perfectly played by Katheryn Winnick) has killed two men for attempting to rape her, led a farming party in a strange land, raised strong children, left her husband for infidelity, overthrown a savage and disrespectful ruler by killing him (did that twice already!), devised several battle attack plans, led many battles and more! She hasn’t played any of those Ragnar’s board games that look like something off those sites where people play bingo and pay with PayPal such as newpaypalbingo.com but it is the perfect picture. Of course folklore says female Vikings were mostly like Lagertha but it is huge credit to the show writers to make a woman to truly be an equal to her male peers in every ramification.
How To Get Away With Murder
How To Get Away With Murder
This show is all about the bisexual Viola Davis and her escapades as a criminal law professor. The story and Viola’s acting meant she went on to win an Emmy for best actress in drama. Her speech on the night was equally as good as her acting in the show! The show is perfect because apart from its strong feminist message, it also addresses racial ills in the society. All-round powerful!
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones
It started out as a near misogynistic show where women were abhorred and only fit to be sex slaves and entertainment tools for men as they map out strategies and engage in political scheming. This show has however since changed completely. The show is in its 6th season and now women reign supreme. Daenerys Targaryan went from a sex slave to a queen with dragons and armies by her side. Sansa Stark went from a raped and battered little girl to a woman that wrestled control of her ancestral home from a heartless villain (she even fed him to the dogs). Arya Stark her sister has grown into a strong assassin etc. This is not discounting other women that are at the helm of plots in the show like The Red Woman, Queen Cersei, Queen Margery and her grandmother etc. Some feminist critics however, still believe Game of Thrones has a lot to do still as most of the women mentioned here, although now very powerful, still can’t do much without the men.
