Stunned into Silence
By Elizabeth P. Brook
Yes, I agree it seems very practical
a common sense approach
but it takes long strides of
compassion, giant steps of empathy
to become enlightened.
Education is not just in a book,
it is in the heart of humanity
to build community, unselfishly.
You must think critically—
then you will not espouse
supremacy, and not live in the past
when some thought we were depraved
but your attitude still shows
your heart to be in a cocoon
not yet in full bloom
with an absence of kindness
and goodness, inhumane.
We are not looking for a handout.
When you see my people—
if you see my people, it is
with myopia, your narrow vision
because you are part of the legacy
You need to grow, there is more
there is bigger, there is better
for all of us. Get information
embrace knowledge, think critically,
think decency, think humanity,
think about the quality of life for all of us—
so we can heal. Change
what you think you know,
your understanding, your awakening of
the realities of prejudice. If you are
willing to listen to embrace truth
we can get past this
or we can both continue
to be stunned into silence
by each other’s existence.
