Las Lucas Que Ilustran
By Bianca Valle
As a bilingual and bicultural student trying to discover my film potential at the California State Summer School for the Arts Pre-College Film and Video Program at Cal Arts, I decided to make a short in Spanish. I wanted it to touch upon the struggle of cultural identity and equality in society currently. This English subtitled video conveys the message that everyone wants the same things such as a prosperous life or healthy family. I hope it reminds audiences that ethnicity or heritage do not signify that humans are different from each other when it comes down to our basic desires, hopes and dreams.
The group of actresses wrapped in white strings of lights suggests the majority in society while the group of actresses in multi-colored lights represents the minorities in society. As the multi-colored, multi-cultural lights attempt to approach the white lights, the color lights are shown they are not welcomed. I chose to use stings of lights make the video seem less aggressive as well as more digestible and inspiring.
