Pics from My Forthcoming CLASH Books Title (Or Not)
The ever-adventurous publisher, CLASH Books, took a gamble on me back in September when I was stuck trying to claim my laptop from Toronto Pearson. I couldn't get my laptop that day because airports suck. Needless to say, it was lovely to see the contract in my inbox after dealing with TSA—er, CATSA—agents. Canadian airport security is still airport security. But enough about airports. The book is called Heaven is a Photograph. It's a collection of narrative poetry and photography. When CLASH editor-in-chief Leza Cantoral asked me to summarize the book, I told her this: "This girl is hungry for the weight of a camera in her hands, but that desire feels wicked. Is it because her father is a war photographer? Or is it because she's yet to become a woman who chases what she wants? Either ways, it doesn't matter what she feels because she knows this: salvation lies in pixels. Heaven is a photograph." The girl is me and not me at the same time.
If you've ever authored a book, you might know how much can get cut during the editing process. One thing I did to prepare for lay-out was make a fat Dropbox folder full of potential images. Then Leza gave me her input and I refined my first batch. I won't tell (or show) you which photos made it into the book. You'll have to buy the book for that. I simply want to offer you a glimpse of some of the photos I initially chose for Heaven is a Photograph, whether they made it into the final product or not. That's why I made this tiny photo gallery:
Heaven is a Photograph will be released by CLASH Books this spring. The official release will happen at AWP in Portland, Oregon in March. An announcement about the online release will be posted to The Real when the time comes. Thanks for hopping into my mind for a minute.
