Dip That in Your Freak SauceBy Julie DiNisio
QuailBellMagazine.com Richmond, Virginia’s most interesting “art culture” is not made up of Monument Avenue-dwelling, Rolls Royce driving, first families of Virginia settling art elitists. Actually, it’s made up of freaks. RVAFreaks.com is a self-declared “central Virginia’s art culture community” which is designed to bring together the punk, goth, pierced, tattooed, and just plain strange subculture of the city’s population. RVAFreaks.com is a little overwhelming at first what with the myriads of links set against an appropriately black background. However, with a little scouring, curious users will come to find a variety of resources for the freak in all of us, including music interviews, comics, pictures, and even an advice column. Dozens of reviews have been posted covering music releases and concerts, literature, movies, and video games. The website shows its humorous sides with tutorials on how to fight off zombies (Romero style, modern style, and cultural). On a more practical note, learn how to build a bat house or roll your own clove cigarettes. Perhaps RVAFreak’s most important role is revealed upon clicking the Events tab. The creators of the website keep users connected with a calendar full of freaky Richmond events. One can attend such events as Freak Day at King’s Dominion, the annual Freak Week, and World Goth Day. There is also a page which has links to all things Richmond–artists, clubs and venues, attractions, and other resources. RVAFreaks.com, with its many links and resources guiding the subset of Richmond, has a little something for anyone willing to look outside the art box. CommentsComments are closed.
