Who's Topo Gigio?
Meet Topo Gigio, a classic character in Spanish and Italian children's television programming, still beloved by many children and children-at-heart in Europe and Latin America.
According to The Official Ed Sullivan website, “Topo's appearances covered many subjects. He often spoke of his Mama and family back home, his girlfriend Rosie, and rock and roll. He also sang classical music, discussed income taxes, Renaissance art and even played the violin.”
In his essay, “Topo Gigio: From 'Eddie, Kiss Me Good Night,” Ithaca College professor, Anthony DiRenzo, an Italian-American who avidly watched “Ed Sullivan” as a child, writes:
• “A la camita”
• “En un bosque de la China”
• “Lo dije yo primero, lo dije yo primero”
• “Quiero ser como mi papá”
To add to his impressive resume, Animal Planet ranked Topo Gigio #23 in their 2003 television special,“50 Greatest TV Animals,” and Topo Gigio is the “spokes-mouse” for the United Nations. Today Topo Gigio still performs at the Festival Zecchino d'Oro in his native Italy.
