The Cake Master
The Icing on the Icing
By Natasha Collins
I have always baked ever since being little, both my Grandmother and Nana were bakers and my Mum and Dad both bake. We always had hand made cake and biscuits in the house, never shop bought!
I have two children so I started making birthday cakes for them and became interested in decorating cakes as well as making them.
Having children and girls especially you become very familiar with fairies very quickly. So naturally that extends to cakes. I love to paint and sculpt pretty things!
The "Puff The Magic Dragon" cake came about because my daughter became obsessed with the song. I had been brought up on Peter, Paul and Mommy as a child and was delighted to find the album released as a CD and so indoctrinated my own children. We had the song on loop for months.
It seemed the obvious starting point for a cake and we had previously bought the book with illustrations by Eric Puybaret, so I used that as inspiration. However I wanted to model a girl rather than a boy and wanted a Pre-Raphaelite look with the design of the dress. I worked as a textile designer for years so I love surface pattern and also this is why I try to paint as much as I can rather than more traditional icing.
I have also made a "Four and Twenty Blackbirds" cake for an exhibition, a fairy cake, a princess castle and a mermaid cake.
Many people say they could not bear to eat my cakes, especially the painted ones, but I love creating something beautiful that has a purpose.
