Marigold Shadows’ “Bolton Layered Mesh Dress”: A Review

“Marigold Shadows” is a creative name for a clothing company which brings magic and fantasy to mind. It is akin to the elusive song lyric “the shadow of your smile.” The name is as unrealistically resonant as “the sounds of silence.” In terms of clothing, I think of Peter Pan finding his lost shadow and wishing to have it sewn on to his body. This appellation reminds me that on Downton Abbey Lady Edith’s daughter was named Marigold. Marigold, of course, was an illegitimate child. She is an appropriate descriptor of this company’s offerings in that they are at once regal and elegant—and irreverent. “Marigold Shadows” clothes have classic lines accented by creative embellishments.
The completely black “Bolton Layered Mesh Dress” exemplifies this point. It is a simple long sleeved sheath highlighted by two layers of mesh sewn half way around the front and back of one of the dress’ sides. The two mesh layers, which are longer than the hem, are finished on the bottom with the same material as the dress. This combination causes the net to relate to the rest of the dress; it results in both casualness and elegance.
The best thing about the dress is that it is made of sweatshirt material. This is what every woman needs: a sweatshirt suitable for wearing at a Downtown Abbey dinner. Even though I am irreverent, I would never dream of going to work in sweats. The “Bolton Layered Mesh Dress” enables me to do so. It is a dressy dress which feels as comfortable as wearing your own shadow. It enables you at once to be dressed appropriately, to be warm, and to move without encumbrance. It is hassle free to the extent that you merely put it on and you’re good to go.
This is the perfect dress for the #Metoo moment in that it is at once feminine, functional, and creative—and outside the dictums of the patriarchal gaze. Actors could have worn it at the Golden Globe Awards. Nancy Pelosi could have been resplendent in it when attending the State of the Union Address. I am going to wear it to work next week.
Versatility, utility, creativity, and elegance characterize the “Bolton Layered Mesh Dress.” Who could ask for anything more? Not Downton’s Marigold. Not me. The dress works because it is attire which can be worn sans women becoming sex object shadows of themselves.
This unique little black dress will become a staple of my wardrobe. When I feel that I have nothing appropriate to wear, I will reach into my closet, grasp my “Bolton Layered Mesh Dress,” and gratefully say, “Hello darkness, my old friend.”
