3 Creators to Watch in 2018
We all consume vast amounts of creative media, even if we don't realize it. There are the usual common sources, such as films, music, video games, and books. But most people also use some form of social media - think about all the photographs, images, videos, even writing, that you see on those platforms.
No matter where you look, there are creative people and creative works all around you. Here are some of the most promising creators to emerge in recent times. These individuals are all set for another year reinventing the rules in their chosen creative field.
Donald Glover
Donald Glover’s career has gone from strength since he first entered the public consciousness as the loveable Troy on TV's Community. Since then, the actor has performed and recorded rap music under the moniker Childish Gambino. Glover has also written and starred in the Emmy Award-winning black comedy - in every sense of the term - Atlanta.
However, before he was producing groundbreaking television and redefining rap, Glover already had his foot in the door of the TV world. With a Childish Gambino college education, he earned a bachelors in dramatic writing from New York University, allowed him to land a job as a staff writer on 30 Rock.
The latest series of Atlanta shows that Glover is still riding high and on top form. Who knows what the rest of 2018 will bring for him, but we're willing to bet he won't disappoint.
Vince Gilligan
Vince Gilligan has come a very long way since he wrote episodes for the X-Files, although any aficionado will testify to the quality of his contributions to the series. Gilligan came to widespread attention as the creator and head writer of Breaking Bad. It’s hard to overstate the impact that Breaking Bad had on television; there are few other shows which are so widely and regularly referred to as being the best drama ever.
The series itself was groundbreaking, but it also coincided with the rise of Netflix. The streaming service had the exclusive rights to distribute the final seasons of Breaking Bad in the UK. Gilligan was offered tremendous amounts of money to bring back Breaking Bad but turned them down. However, a spin-off series starring Bob Odenkirk just began shooting its fourth season.
We can't wait to see where Gilligan goes next. His credits also include a growing list of Hollywood features, such as Hancock.
Maynard James Keenan
The Tool and A Perfect Circle (APC) frontman has been a busy bee over the last few years. A constant stream of music from his solo project, Puscifer, and the imminent release of new APC material – after a series of live releases – have kept fans well fed. Yet they have been clamoring for a new Tool album since 2006’s 10,000 days. There is no band out there like Tool, and no singer as enigmatic as Keenan. It seems that recording on the new album is finally underway. The band has a famously fast turnaround, so we could well see the album this year.
These three are just a small number of the many exciting and talented creators out there today. Whether 2018 will be their year or not remains to be seen, but all the indications are good so far.
