Childhood RevisitedA lot of my ideas come from stumbling upon an interesting setting and creating a story and a character out of it. A few days ago I got turned around in the city and came across an abandoned highschool with a tennis court that glittered with broken glass and was covered in waist-high weeds. I immediately started brainstorming the kind of kid that might hang out there. It reminded me of my childhood; going to the corner-store to buy junk food with whatever change my parents had sitting around and secretly eating my loot around town feeling free and alive- sugar was my drug of choice. The character I have created with these images are inspired by this, the setting, my love for urban street wear/fashion, and my passion for fashion photography. #Photography #Fashion #Childhood #Sweets #Abandoned #Nostalgia #Summer Visit our shop and subscribe. Summer HabitsBy Belle Byrd QuailBellMagazine.com You must search for poetry on the Subway or else your sweat will sink your brain come high summertime when all the bronzed skinny girls make you insane as they crimp and crush and cough and coo at colicky kids two rows away and you try and try to imagine a cool, salty breeze rolling over the bay, rustling your matted mane and quenching your thirst never mind that you have to boil the water first. Do. Not. Think. About. Boiling. You are already boiling, coiling like a worm in the sun, soiling your office clothes with dirt and stink. Perhaps one day you will become a nun and never have to worry about commutes, only God's work and what must be done. There is no Subway at the monastery. Mary, Mary, have you found the verse yet? #Imaginative #OurWorld #NoNostalgiaHere #Subway #Metro #CommuterWoes #Poem #Poetry #CreativeWriting Visit our shop and subscribe. Sponsor us. Bodies of WorkCould you satiate my bones, could you draw a parabola--parabola, that’s the word-- where my collarbone links to my sternum, which shelters my gooey heart, which lugs around my blood, which masquerades as my thoughts... and this is the house that Jack built, here’s the old lady who swallowed a fly. Realizing I’d gotten too old too fast, I fell asleep one night exhausted from wiping the aftertaste of my sobs and laughs out of toilet bowls. Gaps of sunlight shining between fingers where other fingers used to go. Maybe you’ll run richer than the marrow and understand this, get this thing which can’t be gotten or possessed, because therein lies the pine taste in the mango, the inside jokes we have with ourselves. Colleen Foster is a bilingual writer, artistic dabbler, tea server, and ball of quirks who graduated from Shenandoah University with Bachelor's degrees in English in Spanish. While there, she was Assistant Managing Editor of The 'Doah, the student-run newspaper, during which time she won a 3rd place in Feature Story Writing from the Virginia Press Association (VPA). In February 2013, she presented "Glimpses of the White Woman in Three Novels by Mexican-American Authors" at the National Association of African American Studies (NAAAS) & Affiliates’ 21st National Conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Perfect ApartmentBy Virginia Woods QuailBellMagazine.com Put on your poker face because it's time to visit a few leasing offices. Waltz in, unannounced, wearing plain clothes, demanding as a billionaire. You--you—need no appointment anywhere, says the smug smile on your face. You--you—could buy this whole damn building if you wanted, but why? Good day, how are you, please show me a room, studio or 1BR, no pets, now. You'll tell them you're on a budget later; let them assume Daddy cut you off. Walk into each room without a hint of emotion or attachment, even if the hardwood floors, exposed brick, and big windows make you want to squeal harder than a state fair prize pig. Once you've seen all the rooms available, ask for a folder with info. You must have the dimensions and the rates to consider at home. But call within the next hour to say you've made up your mind. Calmly say you want that room. You'll sign the lease today. Otherwise, some other entitled little jerk will take it within 24. (Don't say that last part.) (Really, don't.) (Please don't.) If you're lucky, you'll be moving in next week. You're happy for now, but in seven days, you'll think it's a dump. That's normal, don't freak. You're just another renting chump. #Imaginative #ThisWorld #Poem #Apartments #HomeSweetHome #Renting #Humor #TheStruggleIsReal #CreativeWriting Visit our shop and subscribe. Sponsor us. Strenuous ActivityBy Paisley Hibou QuailBellMagazine.com Sneaks, leggings, sports bra, ponytail—check, check, check, and check. Off to the gym! (Sadly, reluctantly, woefully...oh, why?) Mama's got diabetes, all hands on deck. You will be healthy and fit, no midnight pie. First, to stretch, then to lift lady weights, and then to run in place. Don't look in the mirror; you'll get subconscious about your face. Your face is fine, but those hips? Those thighs? Have you been eating nothing but Crisco the past two weeks? Sorry, that was rude. Don't talk to yourself that way. What are you staring at? Keep your eyes off the guys. You want to be harassed? No, workout privacy is what every woman seeks. No mixing of the sexes. How Victorian! In fact, this is such strenuous activity. It might make you hysterical, you maniac. So, how about zap zap! Electric shocks for you and you and you and you. Feel better now? Is that a buggy on TV? March on, march on, march on. No more distractions for the wicked. Bye-bye, pie. #Imaginative #Nostalgic #VictorianWomen #WorkOut #Exercise #GoingToTheGym #GymBunny #Poem #CreativeWriting Visit our shop and subscribe. Sponsor us. Submit and become a contributor. The Lost JewelChapter 1 – Disappearance
“There,” said Keira. “Come and take a look.” She was a tall, willowy blond of about 22 with a comely face and golden flecks in her light green eyes. “Well,” said Wade as he eyed the large, dark red jewel in the well-secured glass case without too much interest, “it’s big. I'll grant you that.” He was a head taller than his companion and a few years older. His dark brown hair had red highlights and his eyes were dark blue. Together, they made a handsome couple. That is, if they ever were one. “Not that big,” Keira retorted, laughing. “Some known jewels are twice as large, but they are not half that interesting. It’s the carving on it that makes it really peculiar.” “Yea? And what about this carving?” he asked with half an interest waking. “Well, they are signs that look like letters but in no language that anyone has yet managed to read, or even identify. Here, you see this magnifying glass? You can look at the carving through it! The signs may look Chinese, or perhaps like some ancient language in a kind of cuneiform. Actually, they are nothing like anything anyone had ever seen, nothing like any known language, neither modern nor ancient.” “So, is anyone trying to find out what they are?” “Well,” she hesitated a little, “I thought perhaps you could find something about this jewel on the computer, being the sort of expert you are...” Wade transferred his gaze from the jewel to the girl, as if trying to decode her way of talking. They had only met a couple of months before, were attracted enough to each other to have become lovers, and still knew very little about each other. The man shrugged. “I’m not that sort of an expert,” he said with a disinterest that dampened her spirit as a kind of rejection. This was dispersed the next moment with, “Can we discuss it over lunch?” It was, indeed, long after noon, and he had a class in an hour. Wade taught math at the College to which the Museum was attached and where she worked. Keira nodded and led the way out of the Museum toward the cafeteria, which was situated between it and the main College building. Her part-time job at the Museum of Antiquities included sorting out some ancient manuscripts while she was writing her postgraduate thesis in social studies. Wade, whom she met at one of the College's parties, was working on his post-doctoral research on the philosophy of mathematics while teaching it to beginners. The meal was quiet, Keira talking less than her usual habit. At its end, she handed Wade a note upon which the Jewel’s lettering had been copied, and he had agreed to check them on the computer at his leisure. They parted to go their separate ways, he to his class and she back to the Museum to do her job. *** The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
