How We Relearn to LiveHave you ever wondered if the stars make music? I know we’ve discussed them before and how they’re in a vacuum with no sound, but what if they could? Would it sound like a God-sized bonfire or a googolplex of fluttering candles? You and me, I’ve come to realize J, were never really meant to burn out. We give and give and give and never ask anyone to pay us back for the light we share. It is a sharing. Have you ever thought about the shape of the wind, and, yes though it acts like a liquid because it is compiled of noble and common gases, and, yes again, though we have had a conversation about how it flows like water, have you? Do you still close your eyes and imagine that the texture of air and water both feel similar only that one is slightly heavier? I imagine the soul isn’t an essential thing: it’s a compilation of experience, memory, neurons firing to render emotion to equate into a moment, and consciousness. But, if it could fill something up to its brim, maybe even overflow, I imagine yours is much like a pleasant gust.

Playing Kingdom Hearts 2 Helped Me Process My Father's DeathBy John Cappello QuailBellMagazine.com My father, Paul Nicholas Cappello, died last week on November 9, 2017 at age 59. He suffered his final years from a form of dementia, but was taken away from us by a sudden heart attack. He was my best friend. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Al Franken and the Golden Age of VipersWe live in the golden age of non-apologies. From Kevin Spacey believing coming out of the closet covered for lunging at a 14 year old Anthony Rapp counts to Louis C.K. managing to write an apology without writing the word "sorry" after he got caught whipping his dick out in front of women he had obvious power over, this is for beating around the bush what 1996 was for hip hop . It's the World Cup of Cynicism in what response to what does feel like a historic moment. And like OutKast's ATLiens, Al Franken's resignation speech at the senate isn't the front runner, but it's the one I will argue for as the exemplar of the form. I'll always have that Occupy Democrats meme bushwa Al sputtered out in the Capitol in the cellar of my shriveled and blackened heart until I'm in the ground cold. Smoke on the HorizonIt’s no surprise that major sociopolitical changes lead to an influx of art. An event like the election of Donald Trump has produced a plethora of art as both resistance and a response to the changing times. For writers, this often means writing down their thoughts on new legislation, the president’s Twitter account, and any other actions by his administration. It's a form of catharsis and an outlet for any feelings they have, positive or negative, and in a way that can add to the discussion or create something meaningful. Authentic Experiences: An Interview with K.C. Finn About Disability in Literature
Finding books featuring characters with disabilities isn’t hard, but finding realistic ones is a challenge. In an effort to promote more diverse and authentic texts about disability, particularly in young adult literature, I sought out an author who brought realistic experiences to the page. I found and interviewed K.C. Finn, the award-winning author of The Mind’s Eye and many other best-selling novels. The Mind’s Eye, the first book in the SYNSK series, follows Kit Cavendish, a teenage girl sent to live in a safe house following the London bombings during World War II. Kit is wheelchair-bound and possesses telepathic abilities, often exploring the minds of friends and strangers. She stumbles upon Henri, another teen enduring the Nazi occupation of his hometown of Oslo. Together, they uncover many secrets and create a unique bond. In the interview, I asked about everything from the background of the book, annoying Y.A. lit tropes, and tips for success in writing and beyond. Beanies and BestiesA wise school counselor once told me that friends are made through mutual love for a topic. Please insert here a stereotypical montage of several club try outs and awkward handshakes. I learned the hard way that undeniable bonds that withstand the test of time are a scarcity. College life simply reinforced it. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.

10. I Forgot A Gorilla Could Be FingerprintedBy Anne Gorrick QuailBellMagazine.com *Author's Note: After a poem of the same name by Eileen Tabios. This work is from a larger series called Amnesia (a Remix). A front-projected diety with laser-based fingers, the fifth episode of the sixth season, finished in silver foil = Space and Music and Films and Aliens and stuff. I forget how smart you are. The door is locked. Render images that, even to the naked eye, seem to float in space. Find tickets for Ivy Dye / Pool Holograph / The Local Void. Tickets starting at $5. The night in its performance thaws vaudevillians and holographic pop stars, appears in the dust of an automobile hood. The next moment the client is screaming, "I forgot, I forgot, I totally forgot that I had a head-on collision at that age.” Information about each small image is scattered throughout this text. In the future there will be only holographic anime pop stars, teleporting entities with weird eyes that are well, weird. The mass must be completely described as on the surface of the sphere. The mass must be forgotten. The most common reason clients report not using their coping skills is simply, “I forgot.” You're able to enter a game, story, faraway locale or learning environment, recently proposed in these optical remote sensing applications. Memories could be a residual element to what electricity suggests. There was a weird "Ah…I forgot I was wearing holographic clothes." A repatterning for the next day. Tim Burton and the Cult of the White FreaksBy Archita Mittra @archita_mittra QuailBellMagazine.com *Editor's Note: This personal essay was previously published on Her Culture. When I was 12 or 13, I went through an intense punk phase, complete with electric blue highlights, ripped jeans, inscribing Green Day lyrics on the walls of my room, and a vocabulary of extremely colourful expletives. I was a devoted rebel without a cause. I was suffering from a severe identity crisis. I’ve always been a weird person. I’ve always liked the strange and eccentric characters. I took to writing emo poetry and creating morbid art, because I couldn’t speak, because for the most part of my childhood and my teenage years, I didn’t have the right words, the right face, the right personality, to fucking speak. I’m 20 now, and I still make morbid stuff, and things have changed, but only a bit. I close my eyes and I’m back there in that dark room with no light, a child with sewn lips, trying to articulate a trauma that knows no language. Somewhere in that demented darkness, I discovered, among other things, the films of Tim Burton. I fell in love with him and just some months back, I think, he betrayed me. This is why I almost didn’t write this article. Let me tell you why I fell for him in the first place. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Fucking ResilienceThere has been such a surge of hate towards anything or anyone that is different this past year. The pure vile that people contain shocked me as I watched millions vote for an unqualified man. A man that seemed to hate everything that did not mirror him. A man that promised change, change that so many Americans were desperate for, they were willing to trample on people who were weaker than them, different from them.

One Big Choir Drowning Out a WhistleBy Christopher Sloce QuailBellMagazine.com Terry Crews is the last person I ever expected to have anything in common with and what we did I wish we didn’t.
I wish I was as tall as he was, as handsome, as fit, as funny. I wish somehow when I got put into peewee football it’d have sparked a some long lost neuron and I’d have stuck with being a linebacker until I got scared of my brain looking like oat clusters and I got into acting. And he’s a good artist: I can’t even produce a straight line. He's the last person I would have expected to have been groped at a Hollywood party by a producer. Terry didn't reveal his assailant, just the anger and powerlessness he felt and the resulting desire for retaliation. That is the something I have in common with Crews. Suburban Scorched EarthLast year, when I was going through a 2016 of anxiety, increasing self-doubt, and unfulfilling employment, I wrote a short review for Quail Bell about a book called Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. In that, I toke about how Ng connected with me by writing about a girl named Lydia, whose death revealed the fragile, lonely person she really was. Naturally, I was hooked, and couldn’t stop recommending the book to people. I even got to meet Ng at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs 2017 conference in Washington D.C., where I rushed to get her to sign my copy of the book after awkwardly greeting her by saying “Hi. I love you.” The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Flying to North Carolina and BackBy Beckah Porter QuailBellMagazine.com I’ve never missed a flight, I think in part because I get to the airport extremely early, constantly checking and rechecking my flight number and gate until it’s accidentally memorized, helping my anxiety. Some Thoughts About Nazi PunchingBy Leah Mueller QuailBellMagazine.com I refuse to punch Nazis to show I'm superior to them. Dear Professor Williams: My Body is Not a Wallet to be StolenMen like Harvey Weinstein are not unique. I’ve been working as a model and actor since 2010, and my laundry list of men in the industry like Harvey is so long it can no longer fit in my pocket; the extended list including men outside of my work is even longer. I’ve written about sexual assault a lot this past year. It’s been a difficult topic to avoid, especially as my home country elected a man as President with an equally impressive laundry list of sexual assault allegations lodged against him.

New Relationship Energy 101New Relationship Energy (NRE) is a term used to describe the feelings and energy that accompanies a new relationship. Although this term is popular in the polyamorous community, people who aren’t into polyamory can also relate to NRE as an experience. After all, monogamous relationships go through NRE as well!
