I Miss the '90sBy Annie Tisdale QuailBellMagazine.com Ah, nostalgia! It’s hard to resist the need to reminisce. But, there have already been a lot of lists made about '90s nostalgia. So, you might wonder why anyone would create another one. Perhaps, it’s the desire to return to a time when we were more carefree and had less responsibility. It was a time of emerging technologies, but before the Internet became so ingrained in our everyday lives. Join me now as we rollerblade down memory lane. 1. Steve Urkel What would the 90s be without good ole Steve? He’s the epitome of nerd with his thick coke bottle glasses, suspenders, and “high-water” pants. Urkel was the best part about Family Matters. His catch phrase, “Did I do that?” in his high-pitched, nasally voice and his penchant for cheese made him one of the most endearing characters of laugh track sitcom fame. He had a sexy side, too! My sister was crazy in love with his alter ego, Stefan Urquelle. 2. Doc Martens Flower print dress? Check. Funky vest? Check. Choker necklace? Check. Flannel shirts? Check. Hmmm…Something else is needed to bring this all together. What better else than a pair of Doc Marten boots to put you in mismatched, “I’m wearing everything in my closet” heaven? 3. AOL Don’t you miss dial-up? Okay, maybe not. But, in exchange for the slow connection speeds and not being able to use the phone while surfing, there was a lot more privacy. Now, all our business is on the net and with the NSA sneaking around, it kind of makes me wish we were back in simpler times. 4. SEGA Genesis “Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. When I was dead broke, man I couldn’t picture this.” —Notorious B.I.G I agree with Biggie’s sentiments. To this day, nothing beats the old side scroller games, like Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog (move over Angry Birds). 5. La Macarena Every decade has their one hit wonders. In the '90s the most famous was “La Macarena” by Los Del Rio. Everyone and their mama (and mine, too!) were shaking their butts to this tune. I had no clue what song was about, but it was awesome! Los Del Rio remade the video in 2008, but I’ll always love the original. It’s classic '90s in all its tacky glory. 6. N’ Sync Out of all the boy bands to climb their way to fame, none were so successful as N’ Sync. What did they have that others didn’t? Prince Goldilocks himself, Justin Timberlake. And I hear he’s still doing pretty well for himself nowadays. What do we have in 2013? One Direction? The Wanted? Fun, but no comparison. 7. The Original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers I was there in the beginning. When the OG Power Rangers stepped on the scene, it was a phenomenon, the best “worst TV” of the 90s. The gigantic clumsy robots and monsters… what more could a kid want? And every ranger was color coded just right: the black ranger wore a black suit and the Asian ranger wore a yellow suit. It all made perfect sense. 8. Lunchables When I look back on it, Lunchables weren’t much more than lunchmeat and crackers. But, it was infinitely better than what was being served in the cafeteria. And I’ll take a CapriSun over chocolate milk any day. The only time I’d pass over Lunchables is on pizza day. 9. The PSAs In an effort to keep kids off drugs and help them make good choices, there was a load of scary PSAs that would play during Saturday morning cartoons. The 90’s remake of the original “This is your brain on drugs” PSA from the 80’s starring Rachel Leigh Cook took learning to a whole new level of psycho crazy. Some were just downright creepy, like the pedo-hunting Yellow Dyno. I can happily say I’m drug-free thanks to these commercials. 10. President Bill Clinton I first became politically aware during Bill Clinton’s years in the White House. He played the sax on the Arsenio Hall Show, ate McDonald’s, and according to some, he was also the first black president. And those are just a few of his accomplishments! I was too young to have ever voted for him, but Clinton was a fitting president to reign over the wacky '90s. As a proud member of the “Millennial” generation (or Generation Y), I think the 1990s was one of the best decades, if not the best. But, that’s to be expected. Who knows what those born after the year 2000 will remember about their childhood. Maybe in 20 years they’ll look back and reminisce about the good old days of Lady Gaga and Facebook.
