Uncomfortable in the Best Way: A Review of Oola by Brittany NewellOola by Brittany Newell is somehow about everything and nothing at the same time. There are so many ideas discussed in the book that the brain becomes overwhelmed. Art, culture, finding yourself, sexual and gender identity, the idea of never knowing the people closest to you, all packed into 250 pages of the novel.

Theia ManiaImagine right at this moment if Lady Gaga found a typewriter, a paint brush, and a blank book. Except imagine that Lady Gaga didn’t make it at all and it was actually a poetry book by Bronx writer and artist Dallas Athent and illustrated by Maria Pavlovska. Yes, a bizarre opening for a book review, but a normal opening sentence wouldn’t due.

Snakes and Stones: The Facts and Legends of St. Hilda of Whitby
Welcome to Saint Spotlight, Quail Bell’s new column highlighting female saints. In case you don’t know who I am or what I like babbling about, my name is Gretchen. I’m the managing editor of Quail Bell. I like to babble about religion, feminism, and if I’m feeling particularly masochistic, politics. This column started as a desire for me to get to know other religious figures besides the male figures of the Bible and beyond. Hey, I grew up Protestant, we don’t focus on saints at all, let alone female saints.

A Witch's Brew of Vulnerability, Anger, and Admiration: All The Lives I WantIf you like reading about celebrities and you like discussing culture than All the Lives I Want by Alana Massey is the perfect book for you. Massey mixes the guilty pleasure of gossiping about celebrities and turns it to cultural critical gold in her essay collection. We as a society already hold celebrities on top of a high pedestal. They are the standard for success, beauty, and what living life to the fullest really means. Massey uses our predisposition to see them as idols to amplify the issues our society has with women. She creates a series of feminist conversations that are powerful, jolting, and easy to grasp. The celebrities that Massey discusses ranges from Nicki Minaj to Sylvia Plath. Massey will become a big voice of cultural criticism and feminism with this collection.

The Future is NiceI normally don’t get asked to go to many expos. I’m generally not cut out to see what’s on the cutting edge. That’s not to say I’m someone who treats the word antique as a future-tense verb. My main exposure to expos has been a delayed one, walking the grounds of where they were once held in places like Montreal. The ruins of temporary utopias, if you will. I see what the future was, or at least what it was supposed to be. There’s never been a chance so far to step out in front of it to get a glimpse of what’s coming. Well, that all changed when a friend of mine invited me to a Pepcom expo for science and technology. I RSVP’d for it, and a few weeks later, I met said friend outside the Metropolitan Pavilion one sunshowery evening.
