Rapa NuiRapa Nui is the Polynesian name for a remote, South Pacific island, approximately 2500 miles southeast of the Marquesas Islands. This island’s first European discovery was by a Dutch expedition in 1722 CE, led by navigator Jacob Roggenveen. The Dutch expedition arrived on Easter Sunday, attaching the name Easter Island. Rapa Nui is a small, remote island, creating challenge to early inhabitants, not only to locate and inhabit the island but also to establish a developing culture. Quit Hating On Kim Kardashian-West's Nude Selfies
Kim Kardashian-West’s latest nude selfie didn’t just break the Internet. This time, it shattered a whole city to pieces. Australian street artist Lush Sux transformed the blank side of a Melbourne building’s wall into a canvas for a 3-story mural of Kim's recent naked-yet-censor-barred selfie. Residents didn’t take kindly to the risque sight that appeared over night without any permission from the city. It only lasted 8 hours until someone vandalized it by spray-painting the word “SLUT” in all caps over the lower censor bar covering her not-so-private part.
In Kim Kardashian-West’s own words: “It’s 2016. The body-shaming and slut-shaming — it’s like, enough is enough.” The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Ideas for a Fairy Punk Easter Basket
‘Zines
Adding a couple of locally made ‘zines to the basket is a cool addition as opposed to second-rate candy. Not near a place that carries ‘zines? Etsy has many shops with ‘zines, so just type it in the search bar and explore! Some of my favorites include Basic Paper Airplane and Ilse Content sold by Antiquated Future. Plus, Quail Bell has its own set of print ‘zines if you need a little more quail love in your life! The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
Should You Hire an Event Planner or Do it Alone?
Planning a party or a similar event can be quite stressful. This is why many people choose to hire an event planner. While it may seem to simplify things, this is not always the case. Whether or not an event planner is right for you is dependent on many things. Take a look at these different factors to see whether you should hire someone else to plan your event or simply do it on your own:

The Confession
By Leah Mueller
QuailBellMagazine.com
When I was six, I discovered that adults were shameless liars. One November evening, as I sat in my room reading, my mother called me into the living room. She stared into my eyes, and placed one of her hands tenderly into mine. The grim expression on her face made it clear that she was about to say something I wouldn't like. “I've been meaning to tell you this for quite some time,” she said quietly. “Santa Claus doesn't exist.”

A Flame's Progress, Greek Easter 1981
We arrived late as always, so that there was no place to sit, though there's not a whole lot of sitting in Greek Orthodox churches. Standing in our coats, clutching our unlit candles, we crowded in with the others who, like us, came to church but once or twice a year. I was between my mom and my Thea Yvonne and on the other side of her was my Uncle Art--there's a strange convention in our family to call our Aunts by the Greek Thea but our uncles by the American uncle. I don't know why, but it pretty much sums up the willy-nilly Greek/American distribution of traditions on my mother's side of the family. And if there ever was a perfect blend of these two strains of holidaymaking, it was for me Easter, when I got the best of both worlds.

The Easter Gospel According to a WitchWhen I was very young, Easter would begin with baskets filled with candy and something soft and stuffed, like a bunny or a duck or some other woodland creature. During the sugar high, my mother would wrestle my sisters and I into linen dresses and lace-cuffed socks before taking us to church. Easter is supposed to be the most important day in the Catholic faith, but it always fell way short of Christmas in terms of childish anticipation. Most of what I remember from those masses are tapping the heels of my white-buckled shoes on the wooden pew, watching the dust flicker in and out of the morning light. Cutting in Brussels
When I read that there was a terrorist attack in Brussels this morning, my mind immediately went back to an event that happened to me last summer. It wasn't exactly similar to the terrorist attack, but it's the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Brussels International Airport. It's something that's clouded my impression of the airport, not because of anything the airport did, but because of some people I saw there.

Angry Beavers Is Meant For Good Laughs, Not Life LessonsI was born in 1990 and I am proud of the decade I grew up. Everything in the 90s was better, especially cartoons. I primarily watched cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon – cartoons on stations like PBS didn’t even come close in my book. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.

How Donald Trump Happened
It’s another of a thousand super Tuesdays. I’ve been in thickets of prose for months, at least since November, after taking on a politics assignment, which has put a pit of black and bubbling bile in my stomach, watching and reading with all the joyless, feverish intensity of an ape tugging at its member, and all I got from it was a conclusion I knew would happen and have watched, and it hurts after so many pages to only have this conclusion.

Lies
By G. Davod Schwarz
QuailBellMagazine.com
It seems to me that to ask about lies is to just ask about falsehood. A Yiddish proverb says, "“A half-truth is a whole lie” if this were true it would seem that a whole truth was a half lie. This being the way things are in the world, to not know something is to be possessed with a half truth, and therefore a whole lie.

Kim Kardashian's Idea of Self-Empowerment
Kim Kardashian West broke the Internet (again) March 7 when she posted a nude selfie on Instagram. The selfie shows Kardashian West in a bathroom with bleached hair, two censor bars and a very serious express on her face. The caption reads, “When you’re like I have nothing to wear LOL.” The Internet went crazy, believing that the reality star/entrepreneur shed all her baby weight that she has had since December when Saint was born.

Why You Must Put An End To Witch-Shaming
I’m a real person. I’m also a witch. That’s why asking you to please stop using the term “witch” to describe women whom you don’t like.
During many points in history, being accused of witchcraft could get you killed. We might not get murdered today for our spiritual beliefs and practices, but we still face stigmatization that needs to end. In an age where society values social awareness, it’s time to wake up to the fact that witches come in all shapes, sizes, genders, and moral codes. To call someone a “witch” as an insult is like using any other religious label as such: disrespectful. Undoubtedly an effect of Abrahamic religion’s scorn for witchcraft, people either think of us as mythological beings or just all-around rotten individuals. Hence why people still use the term “witch” as an insult. The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.

Why You're Better Off Being A Picky DateOut of all the things I’ve ever done in my love life, being picky about my dates is one of my least regrettable actions. If anything, the moments I spent suppressing my pickiness were nothing but disservice committed by myself, against myself. I remember I shocked the feminist group at my college when I told them I would never consider dating anyone who didn’t identify as a feminist. I never thought twice about this rejection reason; it just happened because, well, what’s the point of me dating someone who hates feminism? Feminism is about gender equality, so why would I want to date someone who didn’t see all genders as equal? Even the insistence upon binary gender as “natural” and other genders as “Tumblr crap” is enough for me to lose my taste for someone. Life is too short to waste with ignorant people, though I understand people can and do change over time. On the other hand, I have friends who are totally willing to invest the emotional labor and consequential pain that came from attempting to educate their partners about major facets of their lives. “Thanks, but no thanks.” That phrase sums up a large portion of my love life. Every writer knows supporting small presses and upcoming writers is important, but sometimes we all need a little nudge towards some worthy talent. Darren C. Demarre's poem "What the Gun Eats" appeared here on Quail Bell early January, and if you were fan of that work, there's more coming from Demaree at the end of March when his poetry collection The Nineteen Steps Between Us will be released by After the Pause Press.

7 Things My Breakup Taught Me About Dating As A Nonbinary Trans Person
I’ve heard that you learn something new in every relationship you have in life, and I guess that’s true. But I actually learned more in my recent breakup with my ex of nearly a year than I did in the relationship itself. And they were some lessons I really needed.
Dating when you are transgender isn’t easy. Here are some key points I took away from my first relationship after coming out as trans: The Breadcrumbs widget will appear here on the published site.
3 Reasons Why #BoycottBeyoncé Backlash Should Scare You
If you think #AllLivesMatter, then the public's reaction to Beyoncé's #formation Super Bowl performance/music video will make you feel existential embarrassment on the behalf of humanity. This is how far we haven't come along after all these years.
When Beyoncé performed during the Super Bowl Halftime show, she and her dancers did more than provide an artistical portrayal of very real injustices that we’re facing today. They exposed the toxic ways people think about police reform, racism, and black pride. In case you haven’t heard, only 2 people showed up to the Anti-Beyoncé protest outside the NFL’s main building on February 16, 2016. While people clearly aren’t as serious about boycotting Queen Bey as expected, civilians and police alike are scoffing at Beyoncé’s performance because they claim it is anti-white and anti-cop. The backlash against her support for #BlackLivesMatter and Black Pride imagery exposed how many people lack an understanding of how oppressive systems like racism and police brutality are still huge problems. Although the public awareness of police brutality is at an all-time high, people are quick to rationalize cops’ violent conduct. |
