Skincare Gone Kawaii
By Ghia Vitale
Kawaii self-care and skincare makes you glow. That’s why I recently tried the Rilakkuma Blemish Treatment Patch with Hydrocolloid by Rilakkuma Beauty.
As many people already know, I’m a big fan of Rilakkuma, the adorable bear character from San-X. I wrote a review of Rilakkuma and Kaoru, a Netflix stop-motion animation series that’s based on the Rilakkuma world. Then I reviewed Rilakkuma Farm, a cute mobile game app/farm game that features Rilakkuma’s friends front and center. Since then, I’ve been wanting to review more Rilakkuma stuff, so I decided to a review a product from a brand I’ve been curious about for a while: Rilakkuma Beauty! Rilakkuma Beauty is a kawaii brand that sells Rilakkuma-themed skincare products. All of the products come in adorable packaging that’s totally Instagrammable. According to the official website, these products have other desirable effects besides skin health: “You will be dragged into Rilakkuma’s world and become lazy and relaxed while watching what everything Rilakkuma does.” Isn’t that what anyone needs during hectic times like these? Plus, the Rilakkuma Beauty brand is cruelty-free and usually available for a good price. What’s not to love? I bought mine from Jellybeet. I enjoyed buying mine from Jellybeet because they have great customer service and included a cute Rilakkuma pencil with my order. This is the first time I’ve ever ordered anything from a kawaii shop, so I was especially pleased with my buying experience! Now, back to blemish patch business: When you open the box, you see the semi-transparent blemish patches. All of them are shaped like cute little bear heads! They even come in different sizes. They’re sticky, so they stay in place between the plastic. Better yet, once I stuck one onto a pimple, you couldn’t even tell the patch was there! It’s even hard to see me wearing it in any of the pictures I’ve taken. Honestly, I was looking forward to a more visceral patch, but I understand why subtlety is a more marketable approach for a product like this. Can you spot the blemish patch anywhere on my face?
How about now that I'm smiling?
Once I put the blemish patch on my skin, I barely noticed it for the rest of the day. You’re only supposed to leave it on for 6 to 8 hours, but I wound up falling asleep with it on. I completely forgot it was on my face the next morning until I went to the bathroom and remembered I was supposed to take it off.
When I peeled off the patch, I could see visible white splotches on that patch. I’m guessing that means it removed a lot of oil and stuff from my pimple. It was proof that this product has more to offer than kawaii packaging. Here’s a picture of what my pimple looked like before and afterward the blemish patch. I know it's a small pimple, but it's on my left cheek.
I know it’s not a dramatic change, but my skin definitely feels more clean in that area. It also looks slightly less swollen than before. I would definitely use this product again! Wearing this patch feels like having a little “Easter egg” on my face. Due to coronavirus, I wasn’t able to go out and gauge how people reacted to me wearing the patch. I’d imagine many people wouldn’t see the patch because it’s see-through and subtle. However, I could also easily imagine that once people noticed me wearing a little bear head-shaped patch on my face, they could become delightfully curious.
Rilakkuma Beauty offers all of these benefits for an affordable price. I highly recommend trying out the Rilakkuma Blemish Treatment Patch with Hydrocolloid if you want to incorporate kawaii goodness into your skincare routine. I also recommend these patches if you’re a Rilakkuma fan who wants to partake in a bit of self-care. Just remember to wash your hands, especially before touching your face!
