The Children of Jackson Ward
The Children of Jackson Ward is a poetry and photography collection centered on the children living in Richmond, Virginia's black, working class neighborhoods and housing projects near downtown. Though these neighborhoods are now rife with poverty, violence, and illiteracy, they greatly contributed to African-American arts and culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Years ago, Jackson Ward was called the 'Harlem of the South' for its vibrant galleries, theaters, and jazz clubs. Yet much of that prosperity has faded, and local residents face numerous challenges every single day. Many of these residents are children.
Christine Stoddard wrote The Children of Jackson Ward to honor these young people following her year of service as an AmeriCorps volunteer at G.W. Carver Elementary School, where she provided literacy and arts support to a first grade teacher. Kristen Rebelo later took the photographs for The Children of Jackson Ward on the streets of Carver, Newtowne West, Jackson Ward, and Gilpin Court to complement the poetry. She also illustrated the book's stunning cover and designed its clean, simple layout.
Your purchase of The Children of Jackson Ward—currently available as an e-book and eventually as a print book—will support the Quail Bell Scholarship for Creative Promise. This scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior at Richmond Public Schools who shows creative promise in the arts, writing, or entrepreneurship. Please view samples from the book below:
