How to Uncover your Inner ArtistSeeing something beautiful that another person has created can be awe-inspiring, and who hasn’t expressed the wish that they could create something as wondrous themselves? Most people assume that unless they’ve got an obvious talent for art and other creative activities, they’re simply not capable of achieving anything worthwhile with their efforts. While it’s true that some artists and crafts people seem to have been born with an exceptional talent, that doesn’t mean that you can’t create amazing artworks of your own; it’s just a question of finding the right outlet, and putting in the effort. Finding your niche
There are many different ways in which you can express your creativity, and new methods of using materials or creating arts and crafts are popping up everywhere. When you think of art, you probably immediately picture lifelike or stylized painting. Maybe you see a pair of Van Gogh’s boots, which were one of his favorite subjects; or the startlingly realistic natural history drawings from the 19th century, like Audubon’s famous birds. In truth, you don’t need to be a painter of that caliber to create a work of art; try looking at all the modern forms of creativity for which you might have an affinity. Take trash, for example. Many contemporary artists and sculptors are using items of garbage to create new works of art. They might take a waste product and reconstitute it, like melting down plastic bottles; or they might repurpose the trash without changing its form, like making a sculpture of a galloping horse or an incredibly detailed insect out of scrap metal harvested from a junked car. There are also the technological developments to consider, from using tablet and computer technology for drawing and design, to the new types of materials that are available. If you have an idea for a sculpture or other three-dimensional object, for example, you don’t need to worry about having no skill at hand tooling. You can create a design using a computer program, and make it using modern castings and mouldings, resins and liquid plastics. Putting in the effort There are far more opportunities to be creative with technology and new materials now than ever before, but you still need to put in the effort to achieve something worthwhile. If you experiment with lots of alternatives until you find something that captures your imagination and that you enjoy spending time doing, chances are you won’t find it a problem to keeping working and practicing until you manage to recreate what you’re seeing in your mind in the real world. It’s often said that nothing worth having or doing comes easily, and creating your own artworks is no exception. Even people whose first efforts at drawing or painting look embarrassingly awful can, with enough practice and determination, improve their style considerably. Imagine then what you could do if you find something that you’re reasonably good at or enjoy doing and make a concerted effort over a long period. You might have grown up believing that very few people have the talent to be artists. In actuality it’s the reverse that’s true: very few people don’t have the talent to create worthwhile art if they try hard enough. CommentsComments are closed.
