Great Global Feminist Destinations To Visit In 2020Research carried out by the Florida State University claims that children’s books are twice as likely to have a main male protagonist than a female one. What can we do to ensure that our younger women know that there are some very strong female leads not only in literature but in real life too? One way of doing this is to take a look at some of the greatest global destinations to visit in 2020. These destinations will educate our youngsters on some of these great feminist pioneers. Here are six places that you can find great icons of female literature, history, and culture: Louise May Alcott’s Home: Concord, Massachusetts The lines between Jo March and Louisa May Alcott are often blurred. However, what can’t be denied is that both women had a unique ambition which still inspires women all over the world today. Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts is where Alcott wrote and set the book. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves both the author and her writing. Anne of Green Gables: Prince Edward Island, Canada Prince Edward Island is undoubtedly a beautiful spot for a vacation anyway, but it’s here that the story of Anne of Green Gables came to life. An important feminist icon, this is where the young orphaned girl battled against prejudice and bullying in order to find a place she could call home. She’s an inspiration for young girls all over the world, and this island is also a great place to have an outdoor vacation and commune with nature. Suffragette Movement Landmarks in London London is undeniably a great city to visit, but you can make the most of a visit here by exploring the landmarks associated with the Suffragettes. Make a point of staying at the Landmark, which held a special breakfast to mark the release of Emmeline Pankhurst from a spell in Holloway prison. There’s also the Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst Memorial at the entrance to Victoria Tower Gardens near the Palace of Westminster. Mrs. Gaskell’s House, Manchester One of Victorian Britain’s greatest novelists, Mrs. Gaskell was a writer who spared little shocking detail about the lives of ordinary working-class women in Manchester. Now, it is possible to visit her house which is just one mile from the city centre. Explore the sights and take a city break in a Grade II listed apartment nearby. Native Manchester wins the Times' best places to stay award for their carefully planned and well-maintained rentals in the area. Mrs. Gaskell’s restored house offers period rooms to view, a villa garden, changing exhibitions and a tea room. There is also a second-hand book sale every second Sunday of the month. Bletchley Park Whilst staying in the UK, make the trip to Bletchley Park. This is the place in which women played a key role in code-breaking during the Second World War. Their oft-forgotten quiet, stoic work is often overshadowed by that of their male counterparts, but is by no means any less important. Their extraordinary contribution to winning the Second World War cannot be underestimated. Here, now, at Bletchley, their time has come. Georgia O’Keeffe’s New Mexico Back over to the USA, feminist art gets a serious look in New Mexico which houses the work of Georgia O’Keeffe. She is thought to have spearheaded a feminist movement in arts and was one of the first women to use the vagina as a recurring theme. Her work is thoughtful, unique and sadly overlooked by many critics, but she is an important feminist icon. CommentsComments are closed.
